Project 3 Statement                   ART 117 Yang Yang

If you want to do street photography, then you should go to crowded places. I went to Washington DC in fall break. This month is the LGBT month. When I went there, there was a big parade in front of the Capital. I thought this was a great chance to do some street photography. The one I love the most is the guy holding a sign said “Fierce My Ass”. Seeing from my position, the sign and the capital formed an interesting picture. I used small aperture so both of the sign and the capital were very clear in the photo. I was waiting behind that guy to take photo. Because I knew he would hold up that sign at some time. I was alert and prepared to take photos. The shutter speed was 1/1250 second, which was fast enough to freeze that moment. When the speech was over, he held up the sign and I began to take photos immediately.

As I knew this project would never be printed, I cared less about the technical things when I took photos. The photo “Oops!” was a little bit blur because when the child moved towards me quickly, I did not have enough time to adjust the aperture and focus. But I still got his emotion at that moment.

Those photos of the parade are the most successful ones. That day was sunny, so I could use very high shutter speed with small aperture. This helped me to freeze moments. And the sky was really blue that day. It also contributed to making beautiful photos. Actually, I shoot a lot of pictures of the parade. But a lot of them were failed because taking pictures of moving and dynamic things was not that easy. To summarize: Shoot a lot, and some of them must be great although many of them are failed.
